Butterfly Coin Top
A simple and easy top to make. Minimal sewing required.
Designer: Dahlal

ITEMS NEEDED TO MAKE IT:

Instructions:

Step 1: Lay out two matching hip wraps, right sides together. Pin the top edges together. Find the center of the top edge and measure out 6.5" from the center on each side (13" total). This will be your neck opening.

Step 2: From the neck opening, pin the top edges together along the decorated portion of the scarf. (Approximately 12" on either side of the neck opening). Machine stitch or hand sew in place.

See diagram.

Step 3: Slip it over your head. With the bottom edges even, have a friend mark the side seams. Make sure the seams are far enough apart so you can easily slip the top on and off. Hand sew together approx. 5" up, starting from the bottom edges. Pull up the bottom part of the stitching so the bottom edge meets the first row of the teardrop fringe.

Step 4: Several options for finishing up your sleeves:

  • Option 1: In a pinch you can actually secure the ends in place with a wide rubber band! Bring the ends together at your wrist and slip a rubber band over your hand. The end of your sleeve will look like it's gathered.

  • Option 2: You can make a casing along the bottom edges of each scarf. Run seam binding along the bottom edges next to the teardrop fringe, turning under the raw edges on either end. Pin in place and hand sew along the top and bottom edges of the binding. Cut a piece of 1/4" elastic about 7" long. Thread it through both scarf ends. Secure the elastic by slightly overlapping the ends and hand sewing in place.

  • Option 3: Hand sew a running stitch along the bottom edges (next to the teardrop fringe) of the scarf ends, connecting the two pieces together. Gather by pulling the thread to form a narrow cuff. Secure and tie off the thread. Make sure the cuff opening is large enough so you can slip it on and off easily.
