Pava’s Folksy Pillbox Hat
Dress up your favorite folkloric style costume with this easy-to-make headpiece.
Designer: Pava of Pava Productions in Peoria, IL

ITEMS NEEDED TO MAKE IT:

  • 1 Single Row Coin Scarf
  • Glitter pillbox hat (gold or silver to match the coin color)
  • 2 small safety pins, scissors
  • Piece of white roll elastic for strap under chin to hold the hat in place.
  • 1 regular tea bag.

Instructions:

1. Place the roll elastic in a cup with the tea bag. Microwave 1/2 cup of water for one minute, then pour it into cup. Let the tea dye the elastic to your own skin shade. (Check frequently to ensure it doesn't get too dark). Once it has reached its desired shade, place the elastic on a piece of paper towel and let it dry.

2. Poke a small hole with scissors on each side of the pillbox hat. String the dyed elastic piece through the hole and knot the end on the inside of the pillbox hat.

3. With the point of the scarf in back, take the top edge of the triangle, pull it up over the pillbox hat so that the coins drape over and cover the front edge of the hat. Arrange the triangle so that one end is longer on one side. Using one of the safety pins, pin the scarf to the hat, in the front, center, underneath section of the hat.

4. Drape the longer end underneath the chin and safety pin it to the other side of the hat.

This particular type of headpiece can be used with debke* costumes and Turkish folk costumes.

*Quick debke costume: Pin two sequin Pakistani scarves lengthwise at your shoulders. Tie a Multirow Coin Hip Wrap around your waist and wear a pair of harem pants underneath. Underneath the tunic you can wear a smooth, sturdy colored bra or sports bra without design. A sleeveless unitard may also be used.
