Checkered Harem Pants So many uses. So easy to make. Turn an affordable checkered veil into a practical pair of harem pants in 6 easy steps.
Designer: Dahlal
ITEMS NEEDED:
Instructions:
1. Fold fabric in half crosswise. (See Diagram A) Cut through the fold. You should now have two equal pieces, one
lying directly on top of the other, with all edges even.
2. Creating the crotch of your harem pants. With both pieces still
lying directly on top of each other, mark in 3" on both sides along
the top edge (cut edges). Now measure down approximately 14" on
both sides and mark. Cut through both pieces of fabric as shown
in
Diagram B (dotted line).
3. Creating the legs. Fold each piece crosswise again with right
sides together. Sew a 5/8" seam along the straight edge of each
leg as shown. (Diagram C)
4. Finishing the crotch. Turn one leg right side out and slip it
inside the other leg. Make sure the cutout areas for the crotch
are in alignment. Sew a 5/8" seam along the raw edges of the crotch.
You may also want to zigzag about 1/4" in from the seam to prevent
any fraying. (Diagram D)
5. Creating the casing. Pull out the leg from inside the other so your pants are completely inside out. (Diagram E) Turn under the top edge of the waist band 1-1/4". Press the fold with a warm iron. Now turn under the raw edge 1/4" and pin in place. Topstitch along the 1/4" folded edge all the way around, leaving a 2" opening for inserting the elastic. Cut a piece of 3/4" non-roll elastic approximately 26" long (this depends on your hip size: 26" works for 36-40" hips) and insert it through the opening. Overlap the raw edges of the elastic 1/2" and secure by sewing back and forth with your machine. Finish top stitching along the rest of the 1/4" fold.
6. Finishing the bottom of the legs. Try the harem pants on and
look at the length. After making a casing at the bottom of each
leg, they should be approx. 3" longer than you'd like, allowing
them to drape. (You can also initially check for length before you
even start this project by folding the fabric in half and turning
the top edge over about 2". This will give you a good estimate of
the finished length.)
When you are absolutely sure of the length, cut off any excess
fabric on the bottom of each leg, remembering to allow extra length
for the casing. Turn under the bottom of each leg 3/4". Press the
fold with a warm iron. Now turn under the raw edges 1/4" and pin
in place. Topstitch along the 1/4" folded edge of each leg, leaving
a 1" opening. Cut two pieces of 3/8" elastic approx. 2" shorter
than your ankle measurement. Insert the elastic through the opening.
Overlap the raw edges of the elastic and secure by sewing back and
forth with your machine. Finish top stitching along the rest of
the 1/4" fold.
