Fast & Easy Pinstripe Beledi Dress
Designer: Dahlal

ITEMS NEEDED TO MAKE IT:

  • Two Pinstripe Veils or or two Checkered Veils
  • Optional Multi-row Coin Wrap

DIRECTIONS:

Step 1:
Take two veils of the same color and measure them lengthwise for the front and back of the dress. The length should be from the top of the shoulder to the top of the foot, allowing for 10-12 inch overlap at the shoulders.

Step 2:
Fold over the top edges of the veils 10-12 inches to determine the correct length, then with small gold safety pins, pin the front and back veil together to make the neck opening. Pinning the two veils together rather than sewing them allows you to use the veils together or separately. Trim away excess fabric from the bottom of the veils and finish the raw edges with a narrow hem.

Note: The opening varies with the size of the dancer on average, the opening is 12". The opening should be comfortable enough to slip your head through, but not too large or else it will slip off of your shoulders.

Step 3:
Tie a coin or coin/bead hip wrap around to secure the veils. Be sure to fold over the sides of the veils at your hips with the front veil over the back. It gives the dress a more finished appearance. Raise your arms overhead in order to blouse up the veils so you will be allowed more movement when dancing. The hip wrap color can match the veil color or use an alternate color for contrast.

Note: Excess fabric leftover from trimming the bottom of the veils can be sewn together and used as a hip wrap or head wrap. Just decorate or adorn with coins, beads or jewelry.

Lurex striped harem pants may be worn underneath in the same or complimentary colors. As for a top underneath the veil, a costume bra, a solid bra with no lace or a sport bra in the same shade as the veils work very well.

The result:
A roomy and comfortable design perfect for tribal-style dance, folkloric numbers or troupe dances!
