8 Point Overskirt:
- 1 Pakistani Scarf (style PIS1 or PIS2) - Just $10 each
Pair with a skirt set:
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1:
Lay your scarf lengthwise in front of you and fold it crosswise in half. Make sure all edges are even. Cut through the crosswise fold. You should now have two pieces of equal size (diagrams 1 and 2). (Click here to see the diagram in new window.)
Step 2:
Take one of the pieces, folding it first lengthwise and then crosswise (diagrams 3a, 3b, and 3c). At the corner of the double fold, mark off a 3" quarter circle. Cut along the dotted line through all layers as noted in Diagram 4.
Step 3:
Next, cut through the TOP LAYER ONLY on the double folded edge (diagram 4). When opened up and laid flat, it should look like diagram 5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the other scarf piece.
Step 4:
After you have finished cutting the other scarf piece, lay both pieces flat Ð one on top of the other with the right sides together. Sew the right sides together from A to B and C to D (diagram 5). Finish the raw edges of both seams.
Step 5:
Making the casing. After you've finished sewing the seams, open up the scarf. There should be a large oval cutout in the center. Now take the 2" hem tape and open out one quarter inch fold of the hem tape, laying it along the raw edge of the cutout, making sure all raw edges are even. (Match the right side of the hem tape to the wrong side of the skirt.) Starting 1" in from the end of the tape, sew along the open fold of the tape, all the way around the oval and up to the point where you began stitching. This should give you a nice 1/4" seam.
Cut off the extra hem tape, leaving a 1" extension. Fold over (crosswise) the first tape extension at the end and then take the other 1/4" folded edge of the hem tape and bring it down so the folded edge lies barely over your seam. (Wrong side of tape over right side of the skirt.) Now top stitch the casing on by stitching right along the very edge of the quarter inch fold. Before sewing up the end of the tape, remember to fold over that raw edge as well. Your casing should now be complete!
Step 6:
Cut a piece of 3/4" nonroll elastic approximately 25". Thread it through the opening of your casing and secure the ends of the elastic by sewing back and forth with your sewing machine.
Step 7:
You should now have a finished 8 point skirt except for a few raw edges along the bottom of the skirt. Make a rolled hem along any raw seam with your sewing machine. Or, if your machine isn't capable, make a very narrow hem by folding the raw edges over 1/8" and then 1/8" again. Zigzag or top stitch along the folded edge.
Step 8:
For extra sparkle (not pictured) sew matching or contrasting sequin trim along the bottom edges of your skirt. Or hand or machine stitch 20mm size pailettes along the edges.
The result:
A great inexpensive skirt you can wear over another skirt or harem pants.
