Step One:
Develop a concept for your design. Anything from symbols and hieroglyphics to swirling abstract patterns and peacock feathers will do. This is your work of art, so go wild!
Step Two:
Create stencils based on your design idea. Painters tape can be used to make stripes or crossing lines. Inexpensive lace can be used to create an intricate, delicate pattern. Any other shapes can be cut from the contact paper. Stick these onto your garments to get an idea of how your design will work on the fabric before you paint.
Step Three:
Start painting! Make sure you test any spray paint before you use it on the clothing so you’re familiar with how heavy the stream will be. Aim for the stencil, not the fabric. This way, the first spot of paint will hit the paper instead of the garment, and you’ll get even coverage. Remember, a little goes a long way – clothing that has been too heavily painted can become stiff and heavy.
Step Four:
Layer the look. Use a paintbrush or applicator bottle to paint additional designs over the stenciled images. We chose to paint peacock feathers over the stripes and swirls we created.
The end result? A funky, fun piece of art that adds flair to any stage costume.
